How liberal discipline policies are making schools less safe

New York public-school students caught stealing, doing drugs or even attacking someone can avoid suspension under new “progressive” discipline rules adopted this month.

Most likely, they will be sent to a talking circle instead, where they can discuss their feelings.

Convinced traditional discipline is racist because blacks are suspended at higher rates than whites, New York City’s Department of Education has in all but the most serious and dangerous offenses replaced out-of-school suspensions with a touchy-feely alternative punishment called “restorative justice,” which isn’t really punishment at all. It’s therapy.

“Every reasonable effort must be made to correct student behavior through…restorative practices,” advises the city’s new 32-page discipline code.

Except everywhere it’s been tried, this softer approach has backfired.

Yes, other large urban school districts are reporting fewer suspensions since adopting the non-punitive approach. But that doesn’t necessarily mean fewer infractions.

A long but thorough article about the failure of liberal policies in our schools.

{“progressive” discipline rules}...Most likely, they will be sent to a talking circle instead, where they can discuss their feelings.

So glad my adult children are past this madness.

It's time to pull your kids out of government schools, people.

You can't expect total strangers to care more about your kids than you.

Out-of-school suspension is a joke, however. They need in-school suspension, if anything.

Getting out of school is just what these punks want.

They should be imprisoned there.

Better yet, bring back the paddle. Corporal punishment is really the only way to deal with these scum.

Not necessary. Just don't live in a district with a significant (>10%) black population when your kids are of school age.

Losers are the students trying to get an education in NYC, most likely immigrants,

Wasn't NYC already one of the worst public school systems in the country?

Predictions :

- black thugs will become even more feral
- the whites and asians that can afford to leave the schools will do so making schools even blacker.
- any decent teacher will leave at the earliest opportunity
- more gang fights between blacks and Hispanics.
- prejudice against blacks will become even more rampant (out of self preservation)
- De Blasio will blame the whites for the problems
- Will the whites finally have had enough?

2 elements to the lack of discipline in school:

1. Without consequences, behavior will not change.

2. Schools receive Federal funding based upon attendance.

Administrators refuse to suspend or expel students for fear of funding reductions.

Gee, WHO could have predicted that?

Put fewer people behind bars for murder, rape, and robbery and the crime statistics look GREAT.

Oh, there's more murder, robbery, and rapes as a result of non-punishment.

But on paper it's a cool story, bro.

I agree, liberals CAN'T be satirized.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under of robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber barons cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some points be satiated; but those who torment us for their own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to heaven yet at the same time likely to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be 'cured' against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on the level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals."

The liberal answer is to hold hands and sing Kumbaya. It matters not if they are dealing with Iran or a high school thug.

How liberal discipline policies are making schools less safe

Can't send your kids to school without the danger of them "learning" that government is full of selfless people who want to do the right thing for everyone, which is good because they're smarter than normal people, and that normal people who want to support themselves and be left alone are "greedy" and should pay even more of their "fair share" than they already are?? Forget the discipline policies. The curriculum sounds downright life-threatening to me!

Individual conservative families win the battle when they are able to move out to the suburbs where the schools are better and the students and parents are more supportive of education.

Conservatives as a whole lose the war when the inner cities become cesspools of liberal nonsense that breed politicians like Obama who go on to wreak havoc at that state and federal level.

Way back when even big cities had sizable conservative populations who could be counted on to keep the lunatic fringe leftists out of public office.

That's not the case anymore.

Being a teacher in the NYC public school system in my early 20’s is what quickly cured me of being brought up to be a liberal. Unless you are willfully ignorant (which many are), it’s impossible to hold on to a philosophy when you are faced every day with how those ideas utterly fail.

The High School senior who drove my bus in Glade, MS in my 5th grade in the '60s had a strap made from the tread of a bus tire and he was authorized to (and did) dish out “restorative justice” to any and all who needed it.

True. My kids go to public school in MA. In state-wide rankings our school district received poor marks for “diversity” as our schools are 97.3% white. Meanwhile 96% of our students score in the top percentile for MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System) Math and English. It’s all about the town you live in basically.

Yeah, and it’s no coincidence that they have the most powerful teachers unions in the country. If a techer is deemed “incompetent” there, they get to watch TV all day in the teachers lounge, and collect their paycheck.
