I think that filming police is a questionable practice, but necessary in some cases. There are far too many cases of police over-reaching and then charging the individual to cover themselves for that over-reach. In other cases the filming of the police is a trap for them as the individual escalates the incident and then selectively releases that which suits them.
But the idea that you make it a felony to film the police, especially coming from a Republican is obnoxious and the voters in this guys district need to think about another person to serve as their representative.
People of Texas, do you know that THIS is..? It's a PHOTO. It was taken with a CAMERA.
I DO *NOT* LIKE CAMERAS..!!
Vllaba? Empowering the police state? Good Lord. Where or was he educated?
Sheer idiocy. It’s nonsense like this that makes the GOP look bad.
With Bonehead running the House and McCommie running the Senate, this could pass.
Oh a law and order type. /s
What’s his email address, I want to tell him “ póg mo thóin”.
OMG, I need to call my state rep and oppose this bill. I believe the vast majority of police discharge their duties lawfully, and, if they do so, they should not worry about being recorded in public places. But I have seen too many cases of abuse of police power to be able to support this bill.
Ping.
How did someone this stupid get elected inn Texas?
Who goes to jail when a mounted security camera records a cop?
Even if someone is unsure about filming police today, they should realize that it is becoming almost impossible not to, since our everyday items are such natural recording devices.
In five years won’t the idea of having discussed making it a felony to record life in public, seem laughable, or worse, terrifying?
This guy is an IDIOT! What the hell is he thinking?
Local FReepers in his district? Challenge accepted?
Wrong in so many ways.
If the police can film you, you can film them. If it is in an area that is open to the public, there is NO expectation of privacy so anyone can be filmed and recorded. Private property owners and other areas that are not public access, then the owner gets to decide what is recorded.
"The bill, HB 2918, adds to the definition of what constitutes interfering with an officers duties, and would make it a Class B Misdemeanor to film, record, photograph, or document the officer within 25 feet while that officer is performing his official duties. That distance is extended to 100 feet if the person is carrying a concealed handgun. There is an exception for news media"
Who will be allowed these special privileges and rights? Politicians, hollywood elites, community activists, race pimps. Will Hillary be exempt from her picture being taken? What about James O’Keefe videos? Those ‘poor’ people he exposed - should they get exemptions and special rights and James get imprisoned for multiple felonies? This won’t be about filming police, it will be about elites having special rights.
I'm sure that we can count on the police to come forward with the evidence that they have collected to show that they acted illegally and without regard to the Constitutional Rights of the citizens.
I didn’t think they were brazen enough to criminalize bloggers yet.
Embarrasing that this bonehead has an R after his name.
Hidden cameras.
