Are you so sure it was the times Paul lived in that is the issue, or is it perhaps that modern Christianity had deviated by becoming too worldly?

There have always been people who have wanted to go contrary to the tide, my own ancestry derives in part from a place famous for group of oddballs who spent their time sitting atop of pillars. There is a strong ascetic strain which makes me think that at least one of the weirdos consented to come down from his perch ;)
