The man who invented the K-Cup coffee pod almost 20 years ago says he regrets doing so, and he can't understand the popularity of the products that critics decry as an environmental catastrophe.
John Sylvan worked at Keurig in the 1990s when he devised a simple product that could create a small mug of coffee out of a plastic pod. Originally aiming it at office workers, Sylvan said he thought the product might have some limited appeal to people who would normally go Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts or other coffee chains in the morning, because now they could get a cup of coffee at work that was cheaper, faster, and no fuss.
"That would make it environmentally neutral, because you wouldn't have those Starbucks cups [everywhere]," Sylvan told the CBC's As It Happens in an interview. "The first market was the office coffee service market," he said, adding he is "absolutely mystified" by his product's popularity in homes.

Wrong date posted. Oops. Should be March 5, 2015.
Just use the reusable K-cups and all is well... Earth SAVED!
Actually, the guy I’d like to get tarred and feathered is whoever invented bottled water. What a scam. Especially since I am the sucker who has to carry the stuff home when my wife wants it from Costco. It’s gonna throw my back out one of these days.
And consider the impact on Global Warming - oops, I meant Climate Change.
This guy is liberal wimp.

Sorry, I’d rather kvetch and wring my hands.
I searched for pictures of K-cups, but I would get banned if I posted most of them.
Using reusable K-cups eliminates the chlorine from the filters in the pods. It makes for better cup of coffee.
He can cure that guilty conscience by donating every penny he made off of those planet killers to the old hippies down at Greenpeace and da Sierra Club. They’ll know what to do with it. LOL!
Screw the environment - I love K-cups....
I’m with you on this. I go to the store to buy bottles of water, cans of air and bags of dirt. What the....???!!!
She would have smacked you in the back of the head and said "You're an idiot! Do you're homework or you'll end up in prison!"
Keurig is too pricey. French press more inexpensive.
they do not work as well... not for me, anyway...
White privilege.
Well, that seems to be the problem right there. He was happy to sell his idea to Keurig for $50,000, but they are now making BILLION$ off of these things and he doesn’t get a cut.
Suddenly he’s unhappy with his invention. Should have put that .01% clause in the contract.
They sell reusables everywhere, even saw ‘em at WalMart. In the meanwhile I hope Sylvan feels so very guilty he turns over all the $$$ he’s made from his guilt-inducing invention to some worthwhile cause, like the USO, or Wounded Warriors. What? You think not?
The boy don’t seem very bright.
Wonder if he regrets his other invention..Easy Widers rolling papers.
Naw, probably not. :-)
Ha!
What he regrets is selling it for $50K....
