When it was released 50 years ago, The Sound of Music became one of the most successful films of all time. It was based on the true story of the von Trapp family (above) - but what did they think of it and was their life really like it was portrayed in the movie?
"Everyone thinks the Sound of Music was exactly the way things happened, and of course it wasn't because there had to be artistic licence," says Johannes von Trapp. He is the youngest son of Georg and Maria - the decorated naval commander and singing nun turned governess of the film.

Perhaps the key ingredient is Nazis?
A completely uneducated guess since I’ve never seen the movie.
Is that you Robert Rodriguez ???
Nazis make people want to sing?
In that case, we should be hearing music from one side of the holler to the other, with this fascist regime.
On a bright note, I went to church today for the first time since moving. When asked where I came from, to deflect any thought I might be a liberal, I said I escaped fascist California. I got lots of very positive responses! I think I’m in the right area now. Ready to holler if need be ;)

I can believe all of that.
Georg von Trapp was born in Zadar, also known as Zara, which is now in Croatia but then belonged to Austria.

That seems about right.

Well some of the Austrian branch of my family escaped to Australia during the war. So there is the European, American and now Australian branches. Various spellings but the same family.
One of the men came back and was helping others escape when he was caught. He survived and went back to Australia after the war.
Rodriguez is a huge film guy. Director/Writer/everything.
But more to the point, if you’ve seen Planet Terror (zombie film), that’s his.
A very compelling point.
Thank you both for the link (or whatever it’s called - got to know more computer-talk-language - )
I will reread the info on the von-Trapps - have been playing YouTube videos for a long time today, on the whole ‘Sound Of Music’ phenomenon.
Jacob’s Dream makes me cry every time I hear it. Those poor little boys all alone hoping mommy and daddy would come soon to take them home, only they never did. And the poor parents hearts must have been broken for the boys to be lost and then found dead. I hope they are all together now and forever.
This is one of my wife’s favorite movies. It is a very lovely movie and I have enjoyed watching it many times over the years. I think Julie Andrews is lovely and if anyone replies to me that she’s a left wing socialist or degenerate in some sort of way I’ll be really mad!!! I don’t want to know!!! :-)

Close enough for government work, as the old saying goes.
But DEERN-dull would be closer.
