The human mind consists of three unique attributes: volition, the ability and necessity to consciously choose all one thinks and does; intellect, the ability to learn by means of language; and rationality, the ability to reason and think. Dog's have none of these attributes. They do not have minds. They have instinct which provides them automatic patterns of behavior which do not require volition, intellect, or reason.
Though I have no objection to people having pets, and understand the sentimentality associated with them, it is less than civilized to have any creatures living in ones home (with exception of human infants) that cannot use the indoor plumbing, make their own meals, or read.
