Pope declares couples who don’t want kids ‘selfish,’ says they are part of a ‘greedy generation’

Pope Francis, who presumably has not been woken up at 4 a.m. on a workday by the howls of a tiny human who wants to be fed and/or changed, says that couples who don’t want to have kids are “selfish” and are part of a “greedy generation.”

Pope Francis told an audience in St Peter’s Square, Rome Wednesday that it’s a depressed society that considers children to be a burden.

“A society with a greedy generation, that doesn’t want to surround itself with children, that considers them above all worrisome, a weight, a risk, is a depressed society,” he said.

“The choice to not have children is selfish. Life rejuvenates and acquires energy when it multiplies: It is enriched, not impoverished.”

Pope Francis said there was a strong correlation between hope in society and “inter-generational harmony.”

Careful. You'll be accused of 'Catholic bashing.'

The Catholics on this site generally do a far more effective job of trashing their church than anyone else can. They trash their church every bit as effectively as ISIS evangelizes for Islam.

Cradle Catholics aren’t the paying kind.

I was raised Catholic. We attended mass regularly with Catechism on Saturday. I and remember very well either my father doing it or him asking me or one of my brothers to put the envelope in the plate. That was in the 60s. It may be different now but it was that way back then.

Way too many. There should be some sort of license to be a parent.

I don’t have kids, and I never had an abortion. The people that I know who don’t have kids usually know how to avoid getting pregnant. Those people are usually career driven, upper income.
The stupid people are the ones who get pregnant, then have an abortion because they do not use birth control.

Well, Pope, I very much wanted children. But now I’m 44. I’ve spent the last 20 years looking for one of those good Catholic guys you’d want me to have children with, and the problem is they’re in very short supply because the Catholic Church has done a horrible job of keeping its flock on the straight and narrow. So sorry if I’ve disappointed you, but you’ve kind of disappointed me.

Demography is Destiny. (Ask the Shakers.) You can name call all you want, but it is none the less the truth. I suspect that your emotional reaction stems from the fact that you know that this is correct.

There are also those who have 1-2, then realize having more is probably a bad idea. Not everyone has the mental or physical wherewithal to handle more.

Whither the selfishness of making ‘em when you shouldn’t?

That is kinda what it sounds like he is saying.

This cat is one odd pope and I don’t get his schtick but, it does make sense why the Pope Emeritus is living in retirement.

Personally, I didn’t go out of my way not to have children, except with one gal but, I was only 17 and in college.

Didn’t seem to make sense unless we were going to be married and she wanted a kid before that whole hocus pocus joined as one thingy.

Since then, I pretty much fell into the role of playboy and the two women I was crazy about had very different views.

For me, I’m okay just working, goofing off and chasing women anymore.

I don’t think I ever want to live with another woman unless my propert is a couple thousand acres and she lives at the boundary line as far from me as possible and even then it might be best if she lived a couple counties away....

The pope calling those who don’t want children “greedy” is like Al Sharpton calling conservatives “racist”.

So people must have kids, but not too many. Got it.

I swear, this guy is the Obama of Popes.

Freerepublic has some of the dumbest, most ignorant commenters.

The pope has never pondered all of these points listed, being so busy with his wife and kids, never read the bible or pondered all of the points of birth control, abortion, marriage.......like the brilliant minds here.

This guy knows more about any issue and how you think than you have ever learned, imagined, or joked about.

And he is just one bishop among many who know as much. They dont handle prideful media well due to humility and they would chastise me for not being kind and silent and patient here with you all. This is what comes from 2000 years of the msgesterium and more than sola scriptura....holy wisdom.

You want us to pop out babies so the Catholic Church can have more people donating money to it?
As an Ex Catholic whose elementary school mate was abused sexually by a bishop, I don't they they know everything.

I dont think they know everything, and their history of abuse of children will scar their image for many years.

I agree. I believe that if you are not desiring kids, you are not in the proper mindset to do well for them. We would be better off if people who didn’t want their kids and subsequently didn’t give a sh1t about and/or abused and neglected them, didn’t have them. I admire parents who recognize the seriousness and dedication it takes to raise kids properly.

There is that possibility, yes. But a lot of times it can have the opposite effect.

Regardless, it is hardly a reason to have children. You have children because you desire to start a family. Not to possibly rid yourself of a personal vice.

the entire gay lifestyle is hedonistic selfishness. it’s deliberately that way.

Barack Obama doesn't want to see his daughters punished with a baby... the way his mother was.

That’s okay, muslim birthrates are doubling. The void will be filled one way or another.

What the world looks like in 25 years, however...
