During a British concert last fall, Dizzy Gillespie dedicated a number to "Mother Africa". Looking at the audience with a characteristically mocking smile, he added, "We're going to take over the world, so you had better get used to it."
The listeners chuckled, secure in their own freedom from predjudice and convinced that Dizzy was just clowning again. A few nights later, a group of British jazzmen held a private party in honor of Gillespie. Toward dawn, Dizzy burst into an impromptu lecture:
"You people had better just lie down and die. You've lost Africa and Asia, and now they are cutting out from white power everywhere. You'd better give up or learn how it fells being a minority."
Dizzy was still laughing, but he wasn't clowning. Gillespie is no racist in the sense of the bitter, separatist sects such as Elijah Muhammad's Temples of Islam. He has led several integrated bands and has many nontoken white friends; but Dizzy's irrressible race pride does symbolize partly the accelerating change in American Negroes' attitudes towards whites-including white liberals-and toward themselves.
They are generating those "winds of social revolution" which labor leader A. Philip Randolph has warned the A.F.L. C.I.O., "are blowing on every institution on the country." Some of the winds are reverse and destructive and represent ugly reverse racism-Crow Jim. Others are inchoate and so far are powered more by smoldering emotions than by specific programs. The strongest are those forces for immediate and final integration which are directed by varying techniques by such groups as the N.A.A.C.P., and the Congress of Racial Equality, and Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
The one organic change which now applies to nearly all Negro adultsincluding the vast majority of the unorganizedhas been underlined by James Baldwin: "The American Negro can

Hmm
Always enjoy reading a good piece by Hentoff.
It's a biography of the Nixon comeback presidential campaign, which is worth reading, IMO.
Who then threw his lot in WITH the black supremacists near the end of his life, to some extent.
He frequently published in Playboy Magazine during the same time period (1962) he wrote this piece about Black Americans.
In those years he was a vocal, mainstream Leftist on most issues, but I don't recall that he was ever anti-Israel, or that he ever attacked free enterprise or great wealth.
Hentoff started to publicly move to the Right on several issues around 1980. Very late in life, he actually went to work for the Cato Institute, and he even wrote a weekly column for World Net Daily at one point in time.
He wrote in the Voice in my day in the Apple
A realistic Woody Guthrie contemporary
Very idiosyncratic
He was prescient about where race was headed even though in his day he loved to bait a bit about bigotry
Sort of an old school urban Jew ...huge Jazz guy....his worldview pretty much emanates from the Village up the I 95 corridor to Beacon Hill
Liberal about social views except abortion a few others
Acts conservative about Israel
Hated Bush and Satan Vice President
An Atlantic writer frequently
Amazing he’s been prolific so long
In those heady days, Negroes were THE minority group. O yeah, there were others, Indians, Chinese, etc. But by and large it was a Black and White world. Now both Black and White are BOTH minority groups.
Unfortunately, IMNVHO, African-Americans are stuck with outdated racial metaphors from the days when they perceived themselves as one-half of the Black/White equation. Now that "Latinos," "Hispanics," etc. are approaching fully one-third of the overall population, the Integration/Civil Rights rhetoric of the 50s and 60s is somewhat irrelevant.
Asians, Middle Eastern and African Muslims, Afro-Caribbeans, and of course, Hispanics, are swamping the country. Narurally, each group has its own racial identity and are united in repugnance at what they see as the "African-American Lifestyle." IMNVHO, "White People," that is Americans of some sort of Western Christian European heritage, are much more tolerant of Negroes than the new Americans, who have apparently not even appeared on the Negro Community's radar, politically represented as they are by the Democrat Party, which is content to keep the Negro underclass as beggars rather than true citizens.
White people are not the Negro's major problem at the moment. The way the country's demographic has changed is everyone's problem. Soon, the Negro component of the population will fall to around 10%. There's no way that half of anything will be "given" to the Negroes. That, that is going to mean trouble.
” IMNVHO, “White People,” that is Americans of some sort of Western Christian European heritage, are much more tolerant of Negroes than the new Americans, “
That’s true. One example being the simmering race war between latinos and blacks that flares up in California schools and prisons. And there have been blacks killed because latino gangs don’t want them living in ‘their’ ‘hood.
Re: “That, that is going to mean trouble.”
I live east of Seattle, in area that is 35% foreign born (mostly Indian, Filipino, and Russian), prosperous, almost no Blacks, and just a small number of Hispanics, very peaceful, and 75% Democrat.
Whenever when of the foreign born gives me grief about being a white Conservative, I always respond, “You have no idea how much you will miss us when we are we gone.”
They have no understanding that the destruction of white Christian culture is going to turn America into the same, violent, garbage dump country they just left.
As fascinatingly documented on Seattle's very own website
Seattle Proves Spengler Theory "Decline of the West"
I haven’t looked at “The Stranger” for a while.
That is really depressing.
Unfortunately, it's not just about Seattle.
