The story somewhat reminds me of the treatment of the holographic doctor on “Voyager” (the Star Trek spin-off series).
The “doctor” was urged to try to understand humans better by having a “home life”, so he programmed a holographic family to be his home life.
When he showed his crewmates how that family interacted, he was told it seemed a little unrealistic.
Trying for a bit more accuracy, he introduced a little randomness.
...
What can I say? Shenanigans ensued.

I will have to dig out a bit of stuff from my abortive collection The Book of Foreshadowed Sorrows.
That story short Heron put up would be perfect for it.
