And President Reagan said, “Alzheimer’s isn’t all bad ... you meet so many wonderful new people every day, like your wife, your driver, your secretary ...”.

Dad did suffer from frustration at his incapacity, as well as from anxiety. Even if you don’t remember yesterday, facing each day in a “new” environment with “new” people is frightening. But it’s over now.

The diagnosis gives a heads-up to the next generation. Mom says Alzheimer’s tracks through the female parent, so my brother and I are not at above-average risk, but my children will be. If research advances on preventive treatment, it will be valuable for them to know they have a hereditary tendency.

Since you have an interest, I would suggest that you begin correlating possible negative factors, even the wildly suppositional, such as; a correlation with using aluminum cookware, and a negative response from consumers of coffee, tea, and wine.

At most, one might find a vaguely illuminated path through the various danger signals, but it does bear keeping an eye on it.

That’s interesting about Alzheimer’s tracking through the women. I never considered that until I read it, but now, looking back at various conversations with people I can see it was a fact I hadn’t used in thinking about the children of Alzheimer’s parents.

Shawn will be here today, and I almost wish he wouldn’t. He’s going to complain and do a half-baked job, and that’s going to upset me for the rest of the day. I really have to get someone else. He’s not much of a self-starter, and has a tendency to be lazy in some jobs. And he did so well his first few times....

I had to have two more breathing treatments last night before I was able to sleep, so I’m on my last packet of steroid vials. Not good.

No wind today, so I can open the door after it warms up a little.
