When I worked at Compaq and helped reviewing those quick start guides the Marketing people would constantly remind us, “This is for someone who plans to operate a computer but can’t figure out how to change the flashing 12:00 in their VCR.”
We actually developed an old Keyboard and Mouse input pair where it didn’t matter which one went into which one (that’s before USB for you kids). But we had to color code them anyway because when we put in the instructions, “It doesn’t matter which one you plug into which socket,” it generated thousands of calls to the help desk.
