Oh, too bad.
Hail and farewell to a splendid actress, whose work I enjoyed immensely.
But Agatha Christie will go on and on, and so will Miss Marple.
No, no, no! As the ultimate Miss Marple fan, I have to disagree. This lady injected some liberalism into the character and stories that was contrary to Agatha Christie’s stories. I tried watching a few of these shows, but I couldn’t take it. McEwan was definitely NOT Miss Marple
Margaret Rutherford, although an amazing actress and the movies wonderful, was not at all playing the Miss Marple of Christie’s books. In fact, Agatha was not at all pleased with Rutherford’s movies. I own all the Rutherford movies on DVD, and they’re fun in their own right, but not at all like the genteel Miss Marple of the books.
The real, best Miss Marple was Joan Hickson. If you haven’t seen the PBS shows featuring Hickson, you really must. They are all on Netflix now. This series was the only one that accurately portrayed the Miss Marple of Christie’s books.
As an aside, Joan Hickson played the housekeeper in one of Margaret Rutherford’s Marple movies.
I am a huge Christie fan, having read all the books and watched most, if not all, of the Poirot and Marple shows and movies. Christie didn’t write as many books as she could have towards the end, due to Britain’s outrageous taxes.
