Oh, too bad.
Hail and farewell to a splendid actress, whose work I enjoyed immensely.
But Agatha Christie will go on and on, and so will Miss Marple.
I thought she was a good 15 years younger! In fact, I always thought she was a bit too young and spry to be Miss Marple. But she was very enjoyable to watch.
They show her Miss Marple over the summer month on PBS SO CAL Plus
RIP and she was a fine actress, however I could not help comparing her to the one true Miss Marple, Margaret Rutherford. There are some roles that to me will always belong to just one actor.
She was the best of some very good Miss Marples. RIP
Miss Marple was ok as a character in Christie’s movies. But I much prefer Hercule Poirot’s character - he is funnier & more devious.
Ping.
I had the same thought to ping Miss Marple. It’s been a long time since
I’ve seen her post but I see she still comes around at times.
I loved her in Macbeth.
RIP.
No, no, no! As the ultimate Miss Marple fan, I have to disagree. This lady injected some liberalism into the character and stories that was contrary to Agatha Christie’s stories. I tried watching a few of these shows, but I couldn’t take it. McEwan was definitely NOT Miss Marple
Margaret Rutherford, although an amazing actress and the movies wonderful, was not at all playing the Miss Marple of Christie’s books. In fact, Agatha was not at all pleased with Rutherford’s movies. I own all the Rutherford movies on DVD, and they’re fun in their own right, but not at all like the genteel Miss Marple of the books.
The real, best Miss Marple was Joan Hickson. If you haven’t seen the PBS shows featuring Hickson, you really must. They are all on Netflix now. This series was the only one that accurately portrayed the Miss Marple of Christie’s books.
As an aside, Joan Hickson played the housekeeper in one of Margaret Rutherford’s Marple movies.
I am a huge Christie fan, having read all the books and watched most, if not all, of the Poirot and Marple shows and movies. Christie didn’t write as many books as she could have towards the end, due to Britain’s outrageous taxes.
I agree that Joan Hickson was the best Miss Marple. She came across as a true Victorian, whereas McEwan’s Miss Marple seemed like someone who had come of age in the 1920s.
Joan Hickson was great in the part. McEwan had a little more edge is all. Rutherford played the buffoon and put me off as a died in the wool Christie fan. Kind of like Ustinov’s Poirot.
It seemed to me that whoever directed the Miss Marples with McEwan added some liberal values in the stories, but maybe I’m just one of those paranoid conservatives you always hear about. ;-)
I agree that Ustinov was a terrible Poirot! I enjoyed Rutherford’s movies for her acting, the comedy, and the story line. I tend to view her character as someone other than Miss Marple.
I wasn’t looking for politics so I can’t really say. Sometimes things go right over my head.
Ha, ha, me, too! As much as I love mysteries and detective stories, I am not the most observant person around.
