France is also the only country I know of that has an government agency that defines what is legal to say in its own language. You wouldn’t believe the hoops they’ve had to jump through to come up with acceptable words for items of new technologies. Not exactly an indication of “invented here”.

Germany has insisted on its own words for things in preference to foreign words. That is wherefrom all the lo-o-ong words for scientific things and the words that seem to be more appropriate to Pacific islanders trying to make sense out of the things the guys from the big boat have back at first discovery.

Wasserstof (water stuff) = hydrogen.
