Source tells Bob Kravitz that Patriots may have deflated footballs in DeflateGate scandal

A source within the NFL tells wthr.com's Bob Kravitz that the league is investigating the possibility that the Patriots deflated footballs in their 45-7 win over the Colts Sunday night.

The source told Kravitz that officials took a ball out of play at one point and weighed it.

A deflated football could potentially be easier to throw and catch in poor weather conditions than a properly inflated ball.

I'm no Rocket Sceinitist but if you fill a ball at room temperature then take it out on the playing field naturally it's going to deflate some at lower temperatures.

45-7?

Maybe the Colts sucked so much they drew air right out of the ball.

V1P1/T1 = V2P2/T2

Yep, just like our tires in cold weather

oops...Pressures lower, but the weights the same. Same amount of molecules, they are just spread out less.

No deflation, just lower pressure. Good example are tires at 70 mave have a tire pressure of 35 psi, but may drop to 25 PSI when the temperature is at 0. That same tire will pressure back up, when the temperature rises.

No doubt that Gronk deflated one of them. Maybe in Arizona the Patriots can make the field so it’s shorter when they are on offense and longer on defense. Kind of like the referees did on the Colts only scoring drive.

Now to take it a step further, A football may lose pressure, and it thusly impacts the tensile strength of the leather of the football. That can impact how the ball is thrown or kicked.

“does a slightly deflated ball weigh less than an inflated one?”

Of course. Everybody knows the truck driver carrying 11 tons of canaries in hid trailer can safely get over the 10 ton limit bridge by banging on the sides of the trailer to put them all in flight.

If the weight difference between a full and a partially deflated pigskin was “in the noise” of the variance in tare weight, then weighing the balls would not provide a meaningful measure of inflation pressure.

It rained the whole game. I doubt weighing game-used (saturated) balls, and comparing the results to pre-game (dry) balls would do any good.

but how come fans of teams that lose to them always make these kinds of excuses?

A slightly deflated ball is easier to grip tightly in wet and/or cold weather.

And a QB who has practiced with fully inflated balls all week is expected to perform better with an under inflated ball? I am dubious.

Hey! That’s MY joke! I told a variation of that joke at an auction the very first time I auctioneered in public in 1968.

Stories like this have gone on for years. When I was a kid it was Ray Guy getting to punt helium-filled footballs. The joke last year was that his bust in Canton would have to be bolted to a table to keep it from floating to the ceiling.

This is probably the same reporter that found the rubber bullets in Ferguson. Weighing a football to determine if it is inflated correctly?....I’d expect this from a six year old’s mind. Don’t tell me our education system is working when you see something like this in the news.

This means nothing. But add it to other incidents over the years where the Patriots coaches were accused of cheating and now you have suspicion.
