Its an ARMY thing, they need it because of sustained operations against armored vehicles and to counter artillery.

The Army can't operate fixed wing attack aircraft. The Air Force got that restriction when they were created as a separate branch.

The Army had more pilots than the Air Force and the Navy in Viet Nam. I looked for pictures and came up with this, there were4 others like the armed Bronco and a small twin jet engined GS model. I don’t know how to post the pictures but here is a reference. I flew in a couple of the ARMY fixed wing aircraft, but not the ones with weapon racks.
