Imagine a hockey player getting a penalty shot and just having the open net in front of him. Or imagine a batter in baseball being allowed to walk up to the plate and be able to just hit the ball out of his hand instead of having it pitched to him. It's about the same thing.
A radical change in the rules is necessary to eliminate this ugly play. For example, you could make a rule that any offensive player making contact with the hoop or net with his hands is given a foul and the ball gets turned over to the other team. This will force the players to actually shoot the ball into the net (or lay it up from below). You touch the hoop or net however and a foul is immediately called on you.
It will likely never happen but that is what is needed.
Ask Wilt Chamberlin.
Almost every rule and regulation in basketball is designed to take away the advantage a tall player has.
It’s was to score because the average NBA player is like 10’2?
1) Take the ball in
2) Dribble down court
3) Drive in for a shot
4) Get fouled
5) Make the free throws
6) Turn ball over to opposing team.
7) Repeat.
Last one to make the free throw wins.
I spent years photographing small division III basketball. Most of the time they were great games. Watching the pros can be boring. But a well played game is a lot of fun when you are up close. Sitting in the nosebleed seats sucks.
Watching a good DI game up close is sometimes downright scary because they are simply huge kids.
Looks like I’m the only Freeper who loves the NBA. Go, Celts!
Everything he complains about with basketball goes doubly with tennis (especially due to improved equipment), but I don’t see any Brits calling out Wimbledon.
Uh, how hard can it be? The game invented over 100 years ago, the basket height has never changed. But...they have grown the players to plus 7 feet tall. They walk up and dunk it everytime.
