Cops do what ever they are told to do.

Well maybe they shouldn't do EVERYTHING they are told to do.

That's the problem today, common sense has been thrown out the window. And guess what, people are fed up with it.

"Anyone else decides to “not do the job” they lose the job."

The NYPD was doing their job in arresting Eric Garner. Yet they were roundly criticized for enforcing these types of misdemeanors.

Rather than write laws and not enforce them, perhaps the legislature should repeal those laws? Crazy idea, I know.

"Go out there and decide what laws they’re going to enforce, which ones they aren’t??"

Yeah! Who do they think they are? Obama?

Not necessarily. Remember, this is NYC. Every damned thing is illegal there. I’d be very interested to see what exactly is happening to the crime rate there. If violent offenders are still being dealt with properly, but the little crap is being overlooked, is it a net negative effect? The “broken windows” theory says yes, but we’re far past broken windows by now.

"Broken windows, re-broken."

How soon they forget. Well, they're about to be reminded.

Agree. I'll see you at the barricades.

“How is that the fault of the police?”

It isn’t! But in general, cops have a had a lot of degeneration in their ranks over my lifetime. That said, just last week I had occasion to interact with an officer from the police department where we own commercial property over a matter of homeless vagrants. It was 1 p.m., he had come on-shift at 6 a.m. In that time frame his entire shift up to the time of our meeting was dealing with calls from citizens about vagrants ( about 10 calls as I recall). I asked him what the local government and the courts were doing about it , and he just shook his head. He said, we cite them, they don’t show up for court, or if they do, they don’t have any money to pay a fine, so they are jailed for a few days which they like because they get fed and have a warm place to sleep. I’ve even had them cited for “theft of electricity” when the show up at my place and plug in their electric blankets in our outdoor service receptacles. Seemingly there is no answer because of governmental attitudes. And you know what else. they are by and large not illegals, they are trash whites, in a town that is now approaching 50% Hispanic residents.

I’m not talking about enforcing the law. I’m talking about how they treat people while enforcing it. We’re supposed to say “Yes, sir” and “No, sir” while they can talk to us like we’re vermin. They’re on a power trip.

As for profiling and treating blacks differently, it’s a fact. A cop sees a black guy walking down the street they’re much more likely to stop and question him than they would if it was a white guy. And why is that? Because it’s their experience that the black probably did something ilegal.

Still they could treat people with respect instead of talking down to them and “ordering” people around and demanding that they “respect my authority”. That’s what a deputy told me last week. “People need to respect my authority”. He also said he shouldn’t be required to wear a body cam. I got on my bike and drove away.

I’m all for repealing unnecessary, ridiculous laws. Selling loose cigarettes should not be a crime and it certainly shouldn’t be an offense that gets one arrested or even detained. More control and less freedom equals more excuses for unnecessary conflict.

“no, it is about life and well being”

It’s about money.

“the mayor can’t project power he doesn’t have”

When the mayor gives the police union more money, he’ll have the police on his side.

It’s simple. Money solves all problems with unions.

Why would you think any differently?

"Selling loose cigarettes should not be a crime"

Fine by me. But make it legal and be prepared for everyone to do it. And there goes some major tax revenue for the city and state of New York.

But to me, that's preferable to making it illegal and not enforcing it.

Can’t disagree with anything you said. Successful LEO’s are people who command respect because of the way they do their job. Any a$$hole with a batch can force you to “obey,” but with the exception of violent criminals, there is simply no excuse for being unnecessarily abusive. And yet, that’s where we are today. As for “profiling Blacks,” the end up doing it for self-preservation. Doesn’t make it right in all cases but if the Blacks want better treatment, it will start with them changing their behavior, not the reverse.

Basically yes, I was paraphrasing some scholar who said the same recently, albeit much more neatly.

Well done, Sharpton/Obama/Blasio.

You left out Holder and Obama. This race war is being instigated from the top.
