Maybe there’s more to the story you’re telling than is being said.
I can’t believe that unregulated street racing is “safer” than not. Why? No safety requirements, no equipment requirements, unregulated “track”, etc.
And the fact that there are fatalities in street racing is counter intuitive to the statement by the police that it was somehow “safer” to allow it.
It would be interesting to see the fatality statistics of course racing vs. street racing...I can’t think of a time in the last 11 years where our local race track had any fatalities...
It was 'safer' for a few reasons:
1. Ohio Street was near the Buffalo River. The only reason for driving there was to go to the flour mills.
2. No thru traffic - no reason whatever to go there except to go to work.
3. No pedestrians
4. Streets practically deserted on weekends, except for the racers
5. No residential property nearby.
