A 13-track album of new music from Madonna has reportedly leaked onto the web. Oh No They Didn’t theorizes that the release could be the entirety of Madonna’s as-yet-unannounced thirteenth studio album, rumored to be titled either Unapologetic B**** or Iconic.

Madonna’s camp has experienced a fury of unauthorized leaks in recent weeks, leading to the singer’s manager, Guy Oseary, to enlist the public’s help. “I would be grateful to any Madonna fans that can assist us in finding those responsible for the leak,” Oseary tweeted after a song called “Rebel Heart” hit the web late last month. “We appreciate your help.”

...Update — 2:15pm ET: In a second Instagram post, Madonna added, “This is artistic rape!! These are early leaked demo’s half of which wont even make it on my album the other half have changed and evolved. This is a form of terrorism. Wtf!!!! Why do people want to destroy artistic process??? Why steal? Why not give me the opportunity to finish and give you my very best?”...

According to the Guardian, she released them to iTunes Saturday and has sold numerous units:

On Saturday, Madonna unexpectedly released six tracks from Rebel Heart on iTunes, following the leak of the unfinished songs earlier in the week: the album itself is not due for release until March. She immediately reached No 1 in the iTunes chart in 36 countries, a situation she described as a miracle...

Last year, Kanye West’s keenly anticipated album Yeezus appeared in full online in advance of its release, ironically four hours after the website buzzfeed.com published a feature detailing the painstaking security around the album – which apparently included storing the music on a hard drive in an airtight, watertight case that could withstand the impact of a plane crash or tsunami – under the headline 8 Reasons You Won’t Hear Yeezus Early.

But Madonna suggested the leak of her demos differed from previous security breaches – frequently traced back to employees of record companies or recording studios – because other non-musical material appeared online at the same time...

She lost the element of surprise. And right or wrong, often the first version heard of a song becomes “the right way to play it”.

There are a number of hits that are covers of other peoples’ songs. Tommy James sought out such a “hit ready” song (Mony Mony) after seeing the Riveras make a hit out of someone else’s song (California Sun) that was already a live hit for a number of regional bands.

Elvis reportedly would base his covers of songs off the first version of a song he heard (thus the whole bit about the rabbit that isn’t in the original version of Hound Dog as recorded by Big Mama Thornton).

The public is fickle like that.
