You don't celebrate the solstice. You observe it. As you would any other astronomical event.

Winter solstice occurs at precisely 6:03pm tonight ET.

After which, the sun will begin its slow northward trek back north, casting additional sunlight and longer days upon those 90% of us that happen to live north of the Equator.

True fact. Only 10% of the human population lives south of the Equator. For them, it is now mid-summer.

We get our turn six long months from now.

That’s in reply to those who do celebrate it.

AND ... I do “note” that an astronomical event occurs (I don’t “observe” it either, because of the usage of the word) ... just like I note another kind of natural event like a tornado ripped through a town or like a hurricane tore up a city, or an earthquake devastated some geographical area ... :-) ...
