Well, bith WERE #1 for the whole year. I think the Captain and Tennille piece is almost a Platonic example of a perfect pop tune. Hooks everywhere, infectious tune, clean pop sound, cute but not particularly deep lyrics, fun.
If you look at some of the Yu Tube videos of true live performances (e.g. Midnight Special), you can see how talented they both were, with Dragon tracking half a dozen keyboards and his then devoted wife handling two while singing. She also looks like she means what she's singing, and is having a great time.
