We tentatively decided it is the result of a recent influx of cats.

It ain't the cats........most likely temperature and weather extremes throughout the country that are affecting the migratory patterns of birds normally seen in your area.......

Despite what the ‘news may tell you there haven’t been any significant weather ‘extremes’ except for the California drought.
Last winter’s cold was ‘extreme’.

The only significant change in my local area is the arrival of a “cat nut” and a lot of cats.
