I live in the Florida panhandle. I have a couple of bird feeders in my yard and I keep them filled. For the last few weeks, I haven't had to add any food. It dawned on me that there are no birds in my yard anymore. I used to have many cardinals along with jays, doves, woodpeckers and all the little ones I am not smart enough to identify.
I thought it was just me, but I had dinner with two of my neighbors the other night and they brought up the subject asking where the birds have gone.
Have any Freepers noticed their birds are missing?
Invasive starlings are pushing out a lot of the other bird species in many areas. Have you noticed a surplus of them lately?
If not, maybe it’s pythons?
Lots of birds around here. Maybe some cats moved into the neighborhood ... :-) ...
Now that you mention it we haven’t seen our usual bunch of crows for a few weeks.
We just moved to southern Georgia from Wisconsin, and my wife’s eyes popped out of her head when she saw robins! So THIS is where they go when they fly south!
There’s been a huge migration reported to Bodega Bay in Northern California. Scientists are not sure why.
I also live in the Florida Panhandle and I actually have noticed the same thing. I do see some birds but not nearly as many as I used to.
I too suspect feral house cats.
:) tell your wife they actually fly over the gulf to Mexico and will be drunk-like with exhaustion when they get back in the spring.
How cold has it been?
Just talking about the lack of birds to my neighbor in rural SW VA.
We tentatively decided it is the result of a recent influx of cats.
We got ‘em in California (Imperial county) and Arizona. I can’t keep seed in the feeders. It’s gone in hours.
You might find this interesting.
I think they are all in my back yard. We’re filling our feeders three times a day and they still want more.
We’re also having a big mouse problem.....never have had that before. I keep a clean home, but the little devils are still getting in somewhere. We catch one a day in the trap I keep in the cereal shelf. It is so frustrating! Any suggestions?
There are way more birds this year.
It’s fun when there’s a crapload of them (literally) on the wire, go out and clap really loudly and watch them all woosh away! May be more birds than last year.
“If not, maybe its pythons?”
Could be Global Warming or Global Cats!!!
They may be flying under the Radar or at night.
