Lucy is a Heinz 57, many varieties, and usually that’s the best kind. She will be 5 years old this spring, she weighs about 50 pounds. Some one ditched her when she was about 6 weeks old in the neighborhood. One of the best dogs I ever had.And I have had many.
Rescued mutts are the best dogs - they know somehow they owe you their lives.
Our first dog (rescued mutt) NEVER barked. I should have known when it let out a growl at 2 in the morning something was up - but I stayed in bed. In the morning saw that someone had rustled through my empty truck. 7 cars on the block did have stuff stolen.
The cop said “Anytime you think you hear a noise, or the dog barks, check it out quick. You don’t or you hesitate, and they are gone.”
First and only time anything like that has happened on our block though in 21 years.
The rescued mutt we have now barks his head off. But only if they come into our yard, driveway, or a stranger at the door. The UPS guy gets three or four woofs to let me know he’s there.
There were some workers at the street and he just sat and watched them. One of them came over onto our lawn with his lunch pail and the dog started barking with his booming voice as soon as he stepped on the grass. I was pretty impressed.
They do make good dogs. I grew up with my buddy who was 50% Red Coon Hound and 50% a dozen other things. He was loyal, tough as nails, and child-safe. Poor thing was dubbed "Pixie" by my Mom when we got him because he fit in the palm of her hand - ended up being 85 lbs of alpha male. Had him from the age of 9 and some of my best childhood years included him at my side or ranging the fields as I biked and hiked.
