Football may be king in terms of sporting popularity in the United States currently, but a recent poll suggests that participation could wane in the coming years.
According to Annie Linskey of Bloomberg, 50 percent of the 1,001 American adults polled in a survey from Dec. 3-5 said they would not want their sons to play competitive football.

The lib half want their boys playing with dollies and getting boyfriends. Libs truly are sick psychopaths
Football is a good sport, even if it does destroy a lot of knees and other body parts, so everybody make their own choice. However, every boy should learn to box and wrestle, competitively. A good martial art might suffice, but so many dojos have been dumbed down, it would be hard to find one worth the time.
I’m now from CA and have lived here almost 5 years, and his characterization is more or less spot on, whether you like it or not.
This state is chock full of effeminate pussies, IMO.
If you want to see crazy politics - visit the USA sometime. They elected a closet homo Marxist chain smoking pathological liar as their President -- TWICE! The first time they elected this Marxist race-baiter, they also put a wild-eyed nut-job woman in charge of the House of Representatives, and a crooked old liberal coot in charge of the Senate. You're not from the U.S. are you? If you are, you people are just plain nuts.
My boy played 5 years of Pop Warner and just completed his first year of high school football. Now he’s wrestling for the first time and enjoying it. Half of Americans wouldn’t let their kids play football? Good Lord what has become of our country.....
You don't get out much then.
we don't want our boys being too aggressive and too competitive...we want them passive, playing their porno video games...
we want our kids to be spectators...sad...
I’ve been coaching HS lacrosse in GA for 15 years.
I believe the sport is growing exponentially due to the fact that middle to upper class mothers have been taught to be terrified of football.
I think lacrosse will overtake football (10-20 years) in a lot of HS demographics because of that and an undeniable fact about boys:
boys crave physical sports and contact.
We provide that physical outlet with a far smaller chance of head injuries.
I’m not saying I agree with the trend. My son has been encouraged to play football. But I see it and think it will continue to accelerate.
There are plenty of “average” male Americans who have not been turned into “testosterone challenged” individuals in this state, but there are easily as many who are not what I consider “masculine” nor “manly”, in any sense of the term, and I'm based in a somewhat “conservative” county down south.
I deal with very many individuals in this state and travel frequently and widely and I am only passing along what I observe, and whether you choose to believe so or not, this state is full of “men” who have not had a “traditional” upbringing, and it is blatantly obvious to anyone who pays attention.
I concur. This state is full of crazies.
I loved playing football in Jr HS and HS. I started out as a star and went steadily downhill over time as the other kids grew larger, stronger and faster. It was a good lesson about life.
Football also helped me work through anger about my family situation. I have been a psychologist for nearly 30 years and a productive member of society for longer. Football played a big role in that.
My boys played peewee and went on to wrestling in h.s.
Mine played hockey instead....not a better choice, I got to see a severed finger, broken legs, arms and a nose in a fight not to mention one Adams apple permanently moved.
I’m so tired of pollsters saying “x% of Americans”, when it’s only x% of the people who agreed to take their poll!!!
A poll of 1001 people does NOT represent the American people!
I think that over time, certain activities/trends etc.. just naturally separate into upper middle class or suburban and into "working" class or rural and/or inner city. Football will continue to attract the working classes of the cities and rural areas while lacrosse and soccer dominate youth sports in the suburban and middle class areas.
This isn't a conspiracy. Just people naturally designating themselves as they have always done.
I admit I havent watched lacrosse being played, but on face value it seems like the sticks have to be dangerous and the hard ball can be thrown by the stick at really high speed - how can that be remotely safe???On football, my brother lived a long life, but he finally died of the HS football injury which crippled him. You can say all you want about the odds. But in my school - which hasnt had a losing football season in over fifty years, to give you an idea - no one in our school ever would have considered agitating me to play football after my brothers injury. The thought of broaching the subject to my parents would have made even the head football coachs head explode. Not that I would have been a star player anyway, but I was bigger than most.
My son didnt reach his adult weight in HS, so the subject never came up in our family - but had he been enthusiastic about playing HS football I dont know how Id have handled it. I admit I watch football on TV. But then, I dont even know anyone on the teams on TV - so a certain amount of detachment is involved. But hey - my son suffered a serious injury playing basketball in our driveway.
My brother coached Little League baseball. At a practice one day, a young pitcher accidentally beaned a batter. While the kid was being attended to, my brother called the pitcher over to talk to him. You could see the relief come over him when I called out, Not your fault, Butch! But the batter was hurt, and whose fault was that? The coach, and all the parents who support the game and help organize Little League, you could say society at large. All responsible. There is no such thing as perfect safety for kids, and that is clear to any conservative. But it does make you wonder.
I once was foolish enough to be an assistant coach on the softball team my daughter was on. The other coach took a youngster out of her comfort zone in order to teach her to catch the ball. Which might have been fine, you might say - but not when he ended up knocking out a front tooth with the ball! This business of throwing people into the deep end of the pool can have consequences. It may not always be so funny when you are the one who is in over his head.
Huh? Is there another kind?
As a football official, I don’t blame them. Teams cheer louder for a blind side hit than a touchdown.
I didn’t and still do not want my sons playing football. I am a forty-something and guys my age (around my area) that played in HS are hobbling around these days already on their second knee replacements. They have all sorts of injuries they never got “on the job” throughout life that are haunting them now. This is not to say ALL guys who played football are this way, but of the ones I know, easily 70% are living with some old injury they got while “taking one for the team”.
It was their choice of course, I just caution my boys to take a good, long look and then make an informed decision. It’s nothing “metro” or wussified, it’s long term planning for life.
