I have been to Venice a couple of times but not long enough to explore it thoroughly.

Other places in Italy which are attractive are Perugia, Assisi, Lucca, and Volterra. The last is a bit out of the way but a real gem--an old Etruscan walled city on top of a hill with a spectacular view of the countryside.
