My informed guess is that he ran afoul of the Mexican Mafia, a.k.a. Mexican culture. It is a set of ruthless societal rules that are unforgiving and outside the law. It comes with its own version of “honor killing,” forcing you to kill your spouse and sometimes children if they disrespect you to some degree, such as taking actions to divorce. Also, “acting too white” can make you a pariah in this culture, hence the reluctance to learn English and assimilate into American culture in general.
