Blue Cross is notoriously cheap, and tons of doctors have stopped accepting it. Blue Shield is more expensive, and has much larger provider network.

Unfortunately in California, that metric does not hold true any more.

For most insurers, the provider network for Covered Cal policies is not the same as the network for group policies. So just the company name and history isn’t much of a guide to whether the network will be large or tiny.
