Swing Kids might have been a great movie if it hadn't been so poorly written. For one thing, it had the crisis over Poland, which triggered WWII coming before the Sudetenland crisis--which is like the Declaration of Independence coming before Paul Revere's ride.

He is a good actor. His first role in a film (starring in Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun") was unforgettable. The film itself was wasn't received very well at first. It was Spielberg's first attempt at directing a serious film after his first slew of movies were all big-budgeted, action films ("Jaws", "Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind") and was put through a meat-grinder by the critics for it, but makes the usual list on "films that deserved better" written by various critics over time, expressing a new perspective, reappraisal of movies they now regret having eviscerated critically.

A very good example of this is "Rosemary's Baby". One of the best films ever with first rate acting by Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon winning the only Oscar, not receiving any other Oscar but mentioned often as a film hat should have fared better.

(Interestingly, Mia Farrow, married at the time to Frank Sinatra, yes, that Frank Sinatra, was visited daily on the set much to the sense of intrusiveness by the film's screw, director).

I say this with absolutely no criticism whatsoever, but "Swing Kids" was a most unlikely movie in every possible way (except, as you pointed out, for Bale's acting.)
