The late Dr. Robert Mendelson in his book, Confessions of a Medical Heretic, defined this word as “Greek for ‘an infection you picked up in the hospital’.
Of course the medical profession does not want to tell you about the infections you can pick up in the hospital. There are germs floating around in there that you can’t find anyplace else in town! So instead we tell you in Greek.”
