Word For The Day, Tuesday November 18, 2014
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
aptonym
-n
A name that fits a person's nature or occupation, like Jane House for a real estate agent.
la botana [boh-TAHN-ah]
-n
snack, appetizer
El letrero sobre la puerta dice Botanas y Refrescos.
The sign over the door says Snacks and Soft Drinks.
It’s an Episcopalian church. Not really “national” in any sense of belonging to Americans in general.
What Episcopalians allow in their buildings is their own business.
My wife’s obstetrician bears a distonym - Dr. Dickman.
I didn’t say it was NATIONAL and belonging to Americans in general. I am aghast that a Christian church of ANY denomination would permit a Muslim service within. Obviously this brave woman is of like mind.
Thanks.
And what is the proper term for when you act like I said A and you respond to A, when I, in no way, shape, or form, SAID A, or even inferred A ? because you do that with some frequency!
She is definitely brave
I think a lot of the outrage is because people mis-understand the “National Cathedral” to be some sort of statement about America.
Not you personally, but I think it makes it seem more outrageous to people who don’t know the facts.
Heading you off at the pass? ;-)
well obviously not ME personally because I live here and have been to the National Cathedral, have friends whose kids have gone to HS there, and since I know more about it than YOU do.
no, I think you impute the arguments made by others on the thread to me, and I often don’t even read the comments so I have NO idea why you are arguing those points to me.
how horrible.
Maybe I’m not really addressing you, just the topic you brought up?
I’m with Gruber and Mencken on the general stupidity of the populace.
a beautiful girl, what a shame. Was it leukemia?
okay, but it always sounds like you are responding with a non sequitur to me.
I found hardboiled eggs for .55/each at the newsstand, run by a nice Chinese couple, a block further down the street, and the eggs are warm and come individually bagged along with a little salt thingie. The place directly across from me has not had them the past few times and they are $1.60 for two and are cold.
Don’t lump them all together. That group you have up there is a whole ‘nother breed. They are not orthodox or conservative as my diocese is here.
what % of the denomination is orthodox/ or conservative? I know there are conservative enclaves within, but it seems like the national leadership is of the other breed.
