I was in Art College at the height of the Abstract Expressionist Movement.
It was awful. All the Tuition I spent (which I earned while I was in high school) was wasted on learning “how to express myself”. Heck..I KNEW how to express myself. I was going to College to learn HOW to DRAW and PAINT!
I found the same thing when I went to Art School. We all went to learn to DRAW and PAINT, but were simply taught to “express ourselves” while the “teachers” spent most of their time in the teacher’s lounge, coming out only to criticize our work.
I ended up being self taught.
I skipped art school and all further art classes after being given a small scholarship to the local art institute...
this is the very early 60’s
I agree, Abstract art is junk. It probably began when an artist was so upset because their painting was not going well that they began to throw the paint at the canvas. Then a moron came along and declared it was fabulous art.
I was in art school when I had to have carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand (pottery class did it).
While I was recovering from the surgery I signed up for an abstract class.
No problem........... I could do it with my left hand but it was still junk just like the other students paintings.
