I hope you were only pointing this out as an educational tool, not to make an argument that a Senate-White House move is a good one.

I would note that Warren G. Harding was an outstanding and successful businessman in the PRIVATE SECTOR before going to D.C.—he owned publishing interests, and therefore had governor-like executive experience.

John F Kennedy is a whole different conversation. :)

James A. Garfield was a Congressman from 1863 on and was Senator-elect when nominated for President in 1880. Before entering Congress he had been a college president and a brigadier general in the Union Army.
