I like to travel – domestic, international – I don’t care except to the extent I do really enjoy Europe, less so Asia since I was forced tourist of that region in the 1960s courtesy of the US government. Anyway, I have discovered two types of people – homebodies and travelers – of which wife is the former and I am the latter. I also have friends who would spend their last dime for a trip to Europe and others who ask seriously “why do you want to go there?” It is almost like liberals and conservatives and with all pretensions aside, I find travel educational and stimulating while others (including my wife) find it a hassle, unnecessary and a big waste of money. Since I am retired, I can travel –within reason using Air BnB, the cheap seats and eating in – and find a level of adventure and fun that few other experiences can provide. Any comments on this observation?

My friend’s dad used to book rooms on freighters, which often have extra births for sale. It is slow going but cheap. Cool if you have lots of spare time...and perhaps a love for the sea and ports.

Very much the former; I view travel much like shopping: something that has to be done, sometimes, and shouldn't be done w/o a purpose.

It is kind of funny, although both my wife and I are basically homebodies, we really enjoy getting out of town every once in a while. I have always had to work, with little vacation time off to travel (someone has to pay for the government handouts), so my international travels are limited to Niagra Falls, Canada and Tijuana, Mexico, though I do enjoy taking weekend camping trips way back into the boondocks where few dare to tread. In contrast, my son and daughter have been all over the World. My son lived in Japan for two years while in the Navy and my daughter spent six months living with a family in France as an exchange student.

You’re omitting a very close and very wonderful option - South America is marvelous, easily the equal of Europe.

And then there are guyslike me. Been to 29 countries, just recently australia...and to europe over 60 times, and I hate being without my loved ones.

A lot of Americans really didn't start traveling until after WWII. Simply couldn't afford it, and no interstate system. Even until the seventies many ordinary Americans didn't travel much outside the U.S.

After noticing more people, including my parents, take trips to Las Vegas in the seventies, I concluded that incomes were rising. When people can afford to lose money in Las Vegas, they're not doing too bad.

Used to like to travel some when daughter was younger - adventure, magic, mystery etc - road trips to theme parks, staying in motels, up and down the east coast on I-95 - one morning sitting in a Holiday Inn outside of Harrisburg Pa waiting for breakfast I was watching the people come and go, and it struck me - these folks are pretty much like me and all the people I knew around home - much the same likes, dislikes, worries, problems, and on and on - not really so magical and adventurous at all - since then I’ve been fairly content just to stay home and enjoy what I have and know......
