And when America inevitably falls, will it have a purifying effect? In other words, will America, or what remains of it, be a better country after a collapse? And if the answer is yes, then shouldn’t we actually welcome the collapse in a certain sense?

I personally think that’s too big a question.

People seem to love the apocalyptic. Most of us are tempted to perverse pleasure at others’ pain if it means being proven right. Maybe it will just be a slow, shabby decline. That’s almost a worse punishment; God is clever that way.

Our obligation is to build, both personally and culturally, no matter where we’re at, and to the best of our abilities.

Doing good is purifying. The death of evil perhaps just leaves more room for the good.
