I’ve lived in both Texas and western Washington states.

I like to keep to myself, and frankly the over-friendly people in the southern tier of states tend to irritate me. I prefer distance and personal space except in emergencies, such as volcanoes erupting or earthquakes or tornadoes or hurricanes.

As for gas station attendants, Washington is a “pump your own gas” state. Where ever did you find a gas station attendant? That may explain the attitude.

I walked into the gas station to ask for specific directions and after he told me I began to repeat the directions so he could make sure I understood. I was only into about a sentence and in a very stern voice he said "I already told you."

That was the first person I talked to as we entered Seattle. I know it is unfair for me to judge a city by one person but it still ticked me off.
