Can someone explain to me how a theater was able to send a text to a bunch of people just because they connected to the Wi-Fi? And how did they just happen to film a group of people that almost ALL left their ringers on?

Can someone explain to me how a theater was able to send a text to a bunch of people just because they connected to the Wi-Fi? And how did they just happen to film a group of people that almost ALL left their ringers on? They asked the audience to leave their cell phones on in non-silent mode. Then they used an IMSI catcher (a fake mobile tower) to call all the phones in the theater just before the crash on the screen. At a couple of points in the movie, you'll notice they cut to the person operating the IMSI catcher from a laptop.
