Absolutely. There is a publication about this outbreak in Reston Va. This has been talked about by I group I work with for several years now.
The Reston Ebola strain did not affect humans, just monkeys, but it did infect by airborne means. It never infected any of the dozen or so people who worked there caring for the monkeys. These workers wore no special protective gear (other than what was needed to protect against monkey bites), and they carried monkey carcasses and cleaned the cages of the dead monkeys.
The article and then book was “Crisis in the Hot Zone”. It covered not just Ebola but also Marburg and the Hanta virus which are all similar. In the article the CDC shut down their lab because they were afraid of a spread of one of the viruses in the 3rd level “Hot Zone”. They sealed up the lab and pumped in formaldehyde to kill everything in it.
Turned out the loose strain was Ebola Zaire which only killed monkeys; not humans. Still the caution exhibited then back in the 90’s is strangely absent now.
