ABCs Scandal, which has a fresh episode tonight, last week featured President Fitzgerald Grant, supposedly a Republican, channeling Piers Morgan as he used the State of the Union address to plead for more gun control: How many other peoples children are we going to let die before we put a stop to this?
Grant, played by Tony Goldwyn, recalled how his teen son died of a fluke infection (not true, thats one of many of Scandals wild conspiracies), but there were thousands of people last year who lost their lives in a completely avoidable way.
He then compared gun rights with slavery: The right to bear arms -- set in stone in the Constitution by our founding fathers. So was slavery, by the way.
By that logic, you could say: The right to free speech -- set in stone in the Constitution by our founding fathers. So was slavery, by the way.
Yes, the Founder’s always intended it for it to end.
Slavery was common around the world at the time.
Some people like to say slavery was the foundational sin of America, but that makes no more sense than saying the horse and buggy was the foundational mode of transportation of America.
It simply just existed in many places around the world at the time.
“Where is that slavery clause again?”
Right after the gay marriage clause. :-)
re: “NP. Not trying to be a nit picker but....oh just call it one of those things that grates on my optic nerve when I see it. I must learn to walk away from the keyboard at those times. =;^)”
Totally understand, and I don’t think you were nitpicking. It was a valid point that we need to remember. Our rights do not come from the Constitution, they are supposed to be protected by the Constitution.
re: “Goes with rights are endowed by our Creator. Am I correct?”
Absolutely correct.
Not really. One part of the Dred Scott decision was the requirement that the Federal Government enforce the provisions of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1950. This legislation required States and local governments cooperate in apprehension and return of runaway slaves.
I believe your interpretation of Article One Section 9. “Cannot prohibit slavery until 1808” is incorrect. The article prohibits outlawing the IMPORTATION of slaves into this country before the year 1808. It does not address the institution of slavery itself.
These fools have no idea whats in the constitution or any other American document
What he really means is, Without the “Right to keep and bear arms” we would all be SLAVES today, But he is just too damned stupid to understand, or just plain EVIL.
I summarized too much and I stand corrected. Thank you!
“Where is that slavery clause again?”
The Enumeration Clause [Article 1, section 2] does mention that those “bound to service” count as 3/5 of a person.
Article 1 section 9 specifies that laws against the importation of “such persons” cannot be enacted.
Article 4, section 2 specifies that no “person held in service” can escape to another state [Fugitive Slave Clause].
Then, three generations later, a bloody civil war was fought and the result was three Constitutional Amendments were enacted abolishing slavery, guaranteeing citizenship and the right to vote regardless of race, but not sex. [Women were granted suffrage just after WW1.]
Hence slavery was originally part of the Constitution, but was overturned by Amendment.
The right to keep and bear arms was not part of the original Constitution [because the Founding Fathers considered it to be tacitly understood], but was enacted as the 2nd Amendment and has not been overturned since. If the Left wants to take away our 2nd Amendment rights, they are going to have to draft and submit an Amendment doing so and have it passed by Congress and the States. Wanting of that, it is still the Law of the Land.
Finally, the idea that there is a comparison between slavery and the right to keep and bear arms is absurd — and the implication is offensive. Who’s rights are curbed by law-abiding citizens being armed other than criminals and an oppressive government?
We have seen whose side the Left is on in these matters.
Scandal has gone full on libtard this season. Episode 1 was a string of liberal talking points on sexual assault and 77 cents on the dollar one liners. Episode 2 was on liberal gun talking points. Episode 3, I don’t know... Stopped watching. At one point it was a fun show to watch, but not now.
This was last week’s episode
>>>Where is that slavery clause again?<<<
Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.
Article I, Section 2, Clause 3
It says ‘all other persons”, not Slaves. he great Compromise. Liberals cannot read or comprehend, period.
