Laser mice, and optical mice in general, no longer require contact with a surface to move a wheel which feeds input to the mouse position.
The optical mouse orients itself to the patterned background over which it moves. In theory, one could use it on an air-hockey table, where it would not encounter a surface at all.
In the case of a laser mouse then, resistance is futile.
