That is a question that has been discussed at great length on the radio and telly over the years.
Nobody has a satisfactory answer.
So here are the thoughts of a moose:
The Cold end of the spectrum is easier to understand with Zero being the freezing point of water, not much thought is required to understand the temperature being referred too.
The Hot end of the scale being in F always produces impressive sounding numbers, eg, “it's 110 in the shade today”.
So i put it down to Tradition and convenience combined.
As many other measuring systems are also mixed, this may hold water.
