Have you ever sat in a sprint race car? There are many blind spots and the tiny windshield is covered in dirt (at a dirt track). Add artificial lighting at night and it’s a real possibility you can’t see a guy in a black jumpsuit on a dark track.
This award guy had a history of foolish behavior on the the track and a general disregard of the safety rules.

Add in that the drivers try to relax on caution laps, try to check the equipment, look for signs from their crew, try to figure if they have spare tear-off on their face shield, tighten the chin strap & belts, and then make sure you get lines up for the restart. On lesser tracks the dark, moist dirt combined with bad lighting and dirty shields make driving any open wheel car a daunting task.
