I thought it was proved that long periods w/o sunshine caused depression/blues.

Exposure to sunshine over a short period of time may increase the risk of suicide but may also lower the risk over several months, suggests a new study from Austria.

Makes sense. Anything that provides a short term pick up will give the suicidal person the energy or clearness of thought to actually plan and carry it through.

However long term exposure will lift the mood enough that you become accustomed to feeling better and so suicide is no longer a viable option.

The suicide warnings on any antidepressants are there for exactly the same reason.
