Michigan State is out of my price range. I make too much and they'll charge full boat on the tuition as a result. They're one of the schools that contacted him to apply, their acceptance rate is very low and their tuition is very high. Friend of mine's son is a Junior there and he had difficulty getting in even though his family has an education trust at Michigan State.
That should tell you something bout their acceptance rate. IIRC it's something like 32%.

FReeper NattieShea is happy in Lansing, albeit as a graduate student things are considerably different than for an undergrad. FReeper PowerBaby will be living in Champaign-Urbana when her lab rotation down in Carlyle is done. She likes Illinois so far.
That said, I don't know diddly about Western Illinois as a school, but my suspicion is that the city would be fine. It's in a more rural area, so I wouldn't be too worried. Can't say more than that, sorry.
