Good points. The first one is especially important. FDR let his generals run the war, and did not interfere with operations. I wonder how Vietnam would have turned out had LBJ done the same.
And FDR knew who the enemy was, and went all-in for total victory. We haven't seen that kind of thinking since 1945.
Not entirely true.
Roosevelt did not recognize that the USSR was our enemy.
It may have been better to have delayed as much as possible giving military aid to the Soviets.
Then the Nazis, having gutted the majority of the Soviets strength, at the end of the war we could have finished off the USSR.
I realize of course that this would be unlikely because Roosevelts government was crawling with Soviet spies.
But I think it would have been a better outcome for everyone; Russians, Europeans and US.
Winston Churchill had trouble convincing Roosevelt to go for total victory, if even that. Roosevelt was swayed by Uncle Joe. Read it for yourself in Triumph and Tragedy: Closing the Ring
“And FDR knew who the enemy was, and went all-in for total victory. “
FDR went for Unconditional Surrender, which while it sounds appealing to most civilians is a very bad idea. Your enemy figures that he has everything to lose through surrender and it guarantees that the fighting will go on much longer than is necessary.
Remember the Cold War and enslaved Europe, and Korea and Vietnam, and the Evil empire?
FDR didn’t win total victory, I’m not even sure that we won WWII, the West didn’t survive FDr’s results, we are being erased from history and existence, and the future.
