I Hope you hang out on the thread for when the “There is no such thing as EMP!” FReepers start posting.
EMP? That’s crazy talk!! =D
spaceweather says the cme is going at 2.2 million mph so starting a couple of hours back it should be here in about 45 hours, is that close?
A solar storm will not generate an EMP that can impact electronics - so no need to build a faraday cage for this event.
A solar storm will impact the grid - it will be interesting to see how the grid operators will react to this. If it’s significant - they have more ability to monitor grid components than they ever have had. They’ll have a whole range of options - de-integrate the grid and operate “islands” to keep GIC from being transmitted across grid boundaries - to shutting down major elements of the grid (765kV lines, for instance)
Folks should think about preparing for a power outage of a few hours to a few days in duration. That should cover the most likely contingencies.
Really? I’ve missed that. Are there really people here so stupid as to deny EMP?
The worst of these flares are nature’s EMPs, and they will have similar results if they hit earth.
