There certainly are pipelines in the Ukraine, but there are also pipelines through Minsk and the Baltics. And its much easier to expand throughput through Minsk or the Baltics than seize operational control over the largest nation entirely in Europe.
I do not believe at all that Putin wants to seize all of Ukraine just the eastern most provinces.
Of course he may have mounted the tiger and cannot now find an easy way off.
