Remember it used to be reasoned that if one used enough Hot Sauce etc that, if hungry enough, a mess of ‘horse apples’ would/could be edible....
Also if one ate the local food from vendors on street corners in the countries you mention, there is no telling what you may have eaten or at least had pass through your system back in the day.

I begged Mom to quit sending me cookies, muffins or anything like that because they were full of ants, cockroaches and anything you can think of. I BEGGED for Tabasco, Spam and Beef Jerky. Even a cockroach won’t try Beef Jerky. I found out. (By the way, my niece sent a silver chain with a bottle cap on it and a case of 1/2 ounce Tobasco sauce.) She’s in my will. I heard they might still be available.
