A $22 product designed to protect the most sacred of things when flying - personal space - led to an unscheduled landing in Chicago during a flight from Newark to Denver.
Two passengers aboard the diverted United Airlines flight got into a heated argument Sunday after a male passenger used the product, the Knee Defender, to prevent the woman in the row in front from reclining her seat.
The man, who was not identified, placed the Knee Defenders brackets on his tray table attached to the back of the seat in front of him, 11B.
The female passenger seated in 11B became angry over not being able to recline her seat and reportedly threw a cup of water in the mans face.

You and I are on the same page.
Why would the pilot divert the flight over something like this? This was an emergency? Everyone’s travel plans disrupted because of two idiots and a spineless captain?
Thank you!
But of course, this is Free Republic, where the woman is always wrong.
Now, now, now. I would refer you to Post #1, where I supported the woman in this case.
I would also rephrase your statement: This is Freerepublic where the Democrat woman is always wrong.
I like that better.
;)
Sure, the bulkhead, exit isles, and even upgrades when possible but for those who have to fly coach on business almost every week with frequent last-minute bookings and schedule changes, those seats are rare.
Thanks, it isn’t every day that someone recommends I go on a flight that gets shot down or crashes.
“Sorry Mr. 12B, your space begins where my seat back stops, when in the reclined position.”
Yes, well, my space includes the tray table, which I should have some expectation of actually being able to use to get some work done. That is why I am particularly vigorous with my use of the tray table when the person in front of me has decided to recline their seat under inappropriate circumstances.
That looks very much like the interior of the old Lockheed L-1011 TriStar.
They're wearing flip flops courtesy of your Muzzie terrorist friends. They don't want to have to remove their shoes while being scanned. I still wear shoes and take them off, but I'm sure that's why a lot of passengers wear flip flops.
Last week I flew from Ohio to Texas. When I boarded, the guy in front of me was already kicked fully back and snoring.
LOL
And those circumstances are defined by you.
I would bet she IS a Dem woman because the reactive behavior smacks of a certain type that is absolutely lock-step Dem.
No. It’s because society is low-class. Don’t give a damn about looking decent, only about “comfort” (which I hugely beg to differ on flip-flops or any sandals).
Not all us women agree with the woman all the time either. I in this case, think this went over the top.
“And those circumstances are defined by you.”
Again, I believe that it is rude to recline your seat on an airplane unless you are on an overnight flight.
There’s no reason to recline one’s seat on a short, daytime flight.
The woman asked the flight attendant to ask the man to remove his Knee Defenders. That is completely civilized behavior. The flight attendant asked him to remove the Knee Defenders. She had more than a leg to stand on, because those are prohibited to use on the airline. The man refused. NOW we're entering uncivilized territory. He was politely asked to remove those things so that the woman could get what she paid for, and he decided to be a harda@@ and refuse. I don't know if I would have thrown water on him, but more than likely he said something nasty and stupid to her and she just reacted, after being frustrated by his VERY unchivalrous behavior.
Much more likely HE is a Demojerk. The woman paid good money for the flight. She is entitled to be comfortable. For me, going to Denver is a long flight of several hours. I will be darned if I am going to be forced to spend all that time in an upright position so that the guy behind me can be comfy. A compromise has to be reached. I recline my seat a little, not all the way back, and he can do the same.
When I had little kids traveling with me, I made sure we sat where no one was in front of us so they wouldn’t kick anyone. If you have a problem with people reclining, then you should try the same thing.
I will also add that you might want to change airlines. I traveled on Virgin America for the first time last week and was amazed at how much leg room and larger more comfier seats than American. I will try to go on Virgin more often!
No, no!!! Not what I meant AT ALL!!!
I saw the photo of the empty cabin. You said you needed a “people buffer” which brought to mind the photo...
I, too, need a people buffer especially when traveling so voila!
Mayalasian Air! Once they’ve crashed or been shot out of the air, what are the odds?
Think of all that leg room!
Indeed he sounded like an ass, but “heated” and “diverting” and “both thrown off” sounds a bit more than just tossing water.
Bottom line, instead of ASSuming she can just back into someone, she should be the first to ask if it is OK to recline. [You said she paid money and is entitled to be comfortable (hah, on airlines these days?) - so why not him?]
Sorry, but it is true that they recline more than is really "comfortable" for the next person. I guess that is if you are on a half-empty flight and it doesn't matter.
I already went over the etiquette rules in my first reply.
He could have politely asked her to only recline slightly, not totally. Instead, he came PREPARED to be a b______ with his Knee Defenders. So, your logic doesn’t wash for me. She has a right to recline. Perhaps they could have swapped seats, but with a darn Knee Defender sticking in my back, I wouldn’t feel like compromising either.
